Innovation and energy: where next?

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Scotland needs energy and the energy sector needs innovation – from the birth of an idea all the way through the cycle to commercial success.

There is significant activity in the renewable energy area – for example, Aquamarine’s Oyster technology off Orkney. But renewables can’t yet provide all the energy Scotland requires, and obstacles posed recently by planning and licensing restrictions, as well as by environmental objections, to wind farms by Viking Energy off Shetland and by Scottish Power Renewables off Tiree, are reminders that it may be a long time before it can rise to the challenge.
