Abstract

The paper examines the institutional representation of philosophical (scientific) engineering in Glasgow in the two middle quarter of the nineteenth century, paying particular attention to the context for the formation of the Institution of Engineers in Scotland (which was based in Glasgow) and the status of Glasgow as site for institutions in competition with those in other urban centres, including Edinburgh and London.
