If one can generalise, nineteenth-century psychologists were prepared to use their findings about the origin and function of religion to evaluate the truth of religion. By contrast, twentieth-century psychologists, like twentieth-century sociologists and anthropologists, tended to limit themselves to the origin and function of religion and to declare the truth of religion an issue beyond their ken, one to be considered instead by philosophers, theologians and natural scientists.
