Abstract

The hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes in the swash-zone are investigated through new, detailed, large-scale laboratory experiments. Simultaneous measurements of flow depth and velocity were obtained on mobile beaches, consisting of 1.5mm coarse sand or 10mm gravel, and with a slope of 1:10. In addition, measurements of the sediment transport in the swash-zone were obtained through the use of sediment traps with accurate timing. The paper presents a description of the experimental investigation, including the facility and experimental methods, with the focus on the sediment transport measurements. Typical time-series of flow velocity and sediment transport rates are presented as well.
