A dynamic model for a machine tool spindle rotor mounted on a compliant, damped suspension system is derived and assembled into matrix quadratic farm. Analysis procedures are used to illustrate the inherent, multivariable feedback form of the system model enabling the employment of closed loop investigation techniques. The relative stability properties of the model are established for the operational range of the system. Rotor speed regulation is invoked and the effect of this on the stability of the arrangement is commented upon.
