Abstract

The official name of Malta is the Republic of Malta, or ir-Repubblika ta’ Malta in Maltese. Maltese law is a → mixed jurisdiction, drawing on multiple colonial and cultural influences which left their imprint over the course of the Maltese islands’ rich history.

The roots of the legal system are Roman, although there is little historical evidence of the precise nature of Maltese reception of Roman law or indeed its continuity following the Byzantine period which ended in 870AD (Ganado [1947])...
