Abstract
With many users possessing little cartographic background and knowledge, the resulting maps are, however, seldom carefully thought out cartographic products designed to communicate information effectively and efficiently. The problem at present is that there are few map design guidelines available to assist users in designing the cartographic output in an electronic medium. This paper seeks to re-emphasize the importance of cartographic design and, using the example of the visual variable colour to illustrate, focuses on some of the associated problems. In an age when map communication is of growing importance, the paper seeks to stress the need for cartographers to act now and take this problem on board through the provision of education, training and guidance. -Author
