title = "New directions in contemporary fiddle playing in Norway",
abstract = "A story from the nineteenth century tells about a Hardanger fiddle player who was on the way home after visiting a fellow fiddler on the other side of the mountain, when he suddenly realised that he had forgotten one of the tunes he had learned; in the middle of the mountains, he decided to walk back some fifty kilometres in order to learn and memorise it again. This was more than a century and a half ago, a situation so paradigmatically different to what prevails today as regards mobility and communication: now there is no need to walk at all, and a great variety of tunes and styles is available instantly.",
