Notes on the Nomina Sacra and Biblical Interpretation

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This essay offers rather comprehensive statistics on the occurrence of nomina sacra in our earliest New Testament manuscripts. The figures arrived at for 74 early NT manuscripts are systematically presented and compared to the nomina sacra profile in some later manuscripts, such as Codex Vaticanus, Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Bezae and Codex Washingtonianus. Some suggestions are made, partly differing from previous models, as to the chronological development of the system of nomina sacra. Some reflection on the significance of the scribal practice and on early Christian Name theology conclude the study.
