Abstract

Welcome to Scandinavia. Once the home of warfaring Vikings, now the cradle of the Western welfare state: a place of equal opportunity, gender equality and natural beauty. This image has long been used by political leaders in Sweden, Denmark and Norway to sell democratic visions of the future, both to their own citizens and internationally. But nobody owns the copyright to a nation’s ideal version of itself. This has become palpable in today’s polarized political climate in Scandinavia, where the past has found new spokespersons on the far right.
