Abstract
THE Animal Welfare Act 2006 (AWA) does not sufficiently safeguard the health and welfare of progeny. This was the conclusion of stakeholders attending the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare's (APGAW's) recent roundtable on the breeding and purchasing of healthy dogs. The event, chaired by Lord Trees and run in conjunction with the University of Sussex and the UK Centre for Animal Law, was attended by people from leading canine welfare organisations and experts in animal law and welfare enforcement. It considered the scope and effectiveness of the existing regulatory toolkit (as provided by the AWA and the Animal Welfare [Licensing of Activities Involving Animals] [England] Regulations 2018 [LAIAR]) in regulating breeding of dogs, including those with extremes of conformation, proposed options for reform and explored ways to raise public awareness of the welfare issues suffered by many dogs with physical traits that compromise welfare.
