Abstract

The project contracts2.0 aimed at co-developing innovative approaches to incentivise farmers for the increased provision of environmental public goods, while allowing them to reconcile the profitability of their farms with environmental objectives. The synthesis report introduces the contracts2.0 conceptual, analytical and synthesis framework before summarising the main research results – knowledge from ex-post and ex-ante analyses of novel
approaches. The knowledge gained from our practice and policy stakeholders through Contract and Policy Innovation Labs is summarised, before synthesising our co-developed general design principles and considerations for the governance context of innovative agri-environmental contracts, considering
results-based, collective, and value chain approaches as well as innovative combinations. Finally, lessons learned for the design and implementation process are summarised.
