Abstract

An interconnector is considered for facilitating power trading between two nearby offshore HVDC systems, the Dutch Ijmuiden Ver wind farm and the British Norfolk wind farm. Dutch TSO TenneT is evaluating the feasibility of installing a DC ciruit breaker to protect the Dutch side against DC faults on the British side and the interconnector cable. This paper presents a preliminary study on the technical aspects of DC circuit breaker installation on the Ijmuiden Ver offshore platform. Both the unidirectional and bidirectional DCCB are considered, with
different fault detection methods for each breaker type. The load flow analysis considers the dynamic impact of DCCB inductor on the power flow reversal, as well as the increase in conduction losses. Required DCCB ratings are provided, considering three different DCCB opening times, two MMC blocking strategies and unidirectional or bidirectional current breaking capability.
