Despite the mushrooming literature on crime and violence around the world and on state responses to them, there are far fewer studies of societal responses. Scholars' concern with crime and violence may owe something to the penchant for drama that has inspired a deluge of Netflix series. In the Mexican state of Michoacán, on which this book focuses, it appears de rigueur for researchers to reproduce the grisly story of how severed heads were rolled across a dance floor in 2007 to announce a new criminal alliance.
