The effect of temperature on the corrosion of deepwater structures

The effect of low temperatures found in deepwater locations on the corrosion rate of a high-strength carbon steel was studied. The results show that there is a non-linear increase in the gravimetric corrosion rate of carbon steel in the range -3 to +3°C. The corrosion rate in sub-zero temperatures was found to be between 10 and 30 times smaller than the rate at 18°C. A relationship was established between the corrosion rates of carbon steel and seawater temperature in deepwater conditions. The natural seawater caused a slight increase in the corrosion rate over the synthetic seawater at the low seawater temperatures examined.
