Abstract

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic respiratory condition that continues to be burdensome and impact on quality of life and productivity internationally. Despite availability of medicines and guidelines for healthcare care providers for the optimal management of AR, optimisation of its management in the community continues to be elusive due to several environmental and health care related factors. One factor that that we can no longer ignore, is that AR management is no longer limited to the domain of health care provider decision
making and that people with AR are empowered to make their own choices when choosing how to manage their condition. We must build a bridge between health care provider knowledge and guidelines and patient decision making. To do this, with this commentary, we propose that a shared decision making approach between health care professionals be developed and promoted and we make strides to understand and support patient health literacy with respect to their AR.
