Abstract
Leaving aside hypotheses of affiliation of the Essenes with other groups (John the Baptist, Qumraners, early Christians), this study attempts to think again about how one should undertake a methodical investigation, then tries to illustrate the procedure by investigating each of our sources that names and describes the Essenes, seeking to explain both differences and commonalities while conjuring up the sort of group that lay behind such descriptions.
