Abstract
Ever since the 19th century, scholars and the educated public have been famil-

one scale-pan the heart is placed, in the other we find the symbol of Ma’at,
a feather. The heart of the person being judged is thus weighed against the
symbol of the concept of justice. Anubis operates the scales, and Thot, the
scribe god, notates the result....
