Abstract

A discussion covers the potential for a biomethane of natural gas quality from biomass contribution to the energy panorama in Germany. In two scenarios the upper and lower limits of the potential contribution are defined and analyzed. The today still little used thermochemical conversion path has the potential to increase the biomethane capability and reduce the competition for surface area. Discussion topics include introduction; biomass potential in Germany; selected studies and their results in overview; construction of the scenarios and comparing them, methodology and assumptions; results; and summary and outlook. The government can expect its goal of 6 billion cu m/yr by 2020 and 10 billion cu m/yr by 2030 bionatural gas production to be attained. Photograph, table, graphs, and references.
