Using IPCC RCP 2.6 climate projections for this century, we show how bioenergy crops compare across different countries for dry matter yield and related growth, water use, growing season length and the carbon cost of production. Calculations of country totals use the SSP2 bioenergy land use projections of the RCP 2.6 scenario. We have used the MiscanFor model’s global simulations for the growth of bioenergy crops. This mechanistic model’s processes for crop water loss have been updated, the model modified to create versions which use data at global or regional scales, and its range of output extended. This work is a component of the multi-partner FAB-GGR project to assess the feasibility of supply chains involved in the RCP 2.6 projections which are largely dependent on afforestation and bioenergy use with carbon capture schemes. In conjunction, with MiscanFor, the JULES land surface model has been adapted for Miscanthus giganteus growth, and we show comparisons of output between this large-scale land process simulator and the global crop model.
