Abstract

This article concerns an excellent and previously unknown portrait of Henry Benedict Stuart, Cardinal Duke of York in the collections of the National Museum of Poland in Kielce. It was formerly identified as a portrait of Henry Benedict's grandfather, Jakub Sobieski, by an unknown artist. The article identifies the artist as the distinguished French painter Étienne Parrocel, and considers the problem of how and why it ended up in Poland.
