Abstract
This is one of two scholarly introductions to volume four of the English translation of Mykhailo Hrushevsky's History of Ukraine-Rus'. It is a 30,000-word examination of the context in which Hrushevsky wrote volume four, looking at the situation of Ukrainian and Polish scholarship in Galicia between 1890 and 1914, and critically analyses the text of volume four, paying particular attention to Hrushevsky's approach and to the scholarship he was critiquing.
