Abstract
Clinical benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) is characterised by a combination of bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and increased prostate size. Bothersome LUTS are linked to adverse changes in quality of life and drive men to seek medical advice and treatment. The increased range of therapies currently available has encouraged more men to seek help to alleviate their symptoms and has led to a widening of the indications for interventional treatments. Thus, although it is rarely a life threatening condition, BPE represents a major and increasing health problem resulting in a major burden on an increasingly rationed and cost-conscious health care system.
